Radio outages: Massive solar flare lasted 3 hours
A long-lasting eruption occurred in the sun on Monday. The eruption was classified as M3.4, or medium strength. It was strong enough to cause temporary radio outages in the Asia-Pacific region.
The eruption also resulted in a coronal mass ejection (CME), in which a massive cloud of superheated plasma shot away from the sun.
Coronal mass ejection
When such coronal mass ejections hit Earth, they can trigger powerful geomagnetic storms and cause blackouts, grosser radio blackouts, and auroras. According to experts quoted by Space.com, however, yesterday’s ejection was not directed at Earth.
Solar Cycle
The sun is currently in a more active phase. After the solar minimum in 2019, it is heading toward the solar maximum expected in 2025. After that, activity will decrease again.
